![]() Some guys last night really went for it-and fell flat. The danger here, of course, is that while red carpets have been style moments for as long as actors have paid people to dress them, we’re verging on near-blasphemous costume-party territory. If famous celebrities want to remain famous celebrities, then dressing well, and putting on a show on red carpets, is often an essential part of staying in the limelight in 2018. When celebrities dress well, it gives people an excuse to talk about them even when they’re between projects. And even Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, a tux traditionalist if ever there was one, ditched the classic velvet suit for one with gold-embroidered lapels. There are examples of metamorphosed butterflies all over last night’s Met Gala carpet: Migos traded in last year’s black tuxedos for gaudy Technicolor ones. Last night, he turned the dial up with ornamentation that was louder and a coat even closer to the floor. Then he turned up at this year’s Oscars wearing a long black coat with silver filigree on the shoulders. In 2016, Boseman showed up to the Oscars in the most traditional of tuxedos: black and white with a black bow tie. Just look at the evolution of someone like Boseman. Men have been getting slightly more adventurous, though, a trend that came to a head at last night’s gala. Even the recent memorable Met Gala moments involving men were hardly ever clothing-related-think Diddy lying down in the middle of the staircase, or Jaden Smith carrying his own lopped-off hair. But men typically serve as window dressing, hanging in the background while women show off their elaborate gowns. Instead, in the year of our Lord 2018, the guys brought it. Maybe a bounty of cross pendants and band collars. So heading into last night’s gala, the smart money was on Rihanna riding in on the Popemobile (not too far removed from what happened) and the men making small nods at the theme. In 2014, when Kim Kardashian showed up as a couch, even Kanye-not yet flirting with the alt-right, and merely the most influential man in fashion-turned up in a black-and-white tux. Memes of Rihanna flood the Internet at warp speed, while we’re left guessing the width of a lapel. And every year, without fail, the male celebrities…show up in tuxes. To borrow that metaphor: At these events, guys almost never do the assignment.Įvery year, the Met Gala devises some theme- Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons Fashion in an Age of Technology China: Through the Looking Glass-that encourages celebrities to lose their fashion minds in a competitive game of dress-up. Later in the night, a meme started making the rounds: “Apparently, Rihanna and Chadwick were the only two students who followed directions and did the assigned reading for the Met Gala.” There was Boseman, slotted next to Rihanna, dressed as the pope, going toe-to-toe with the Met Gala’s unofficial queen. It’s just that it usually isn’t the Chadwick Bosemans of the world pulling it off. But “a little ridiculous” is practically the point for any celebrity getting dressed for the Met Gala. I don’t mean that as criticism he looked about as cool as a guy in a gold-cross-embellished suit can. That’s because Boseman was dressed according to this year’s theme, “ Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," in an ivory three-piece suit covered in gold crosses and swirls, with a floor-length cape attached that hung just above his glittering gold shoes. There were a ton of original pieces, some were a hit, some were a complete blunder. This event also celebrates the fundraiser for the Costume Institutes annual operating budget, ensuring fashion and art are everlasting for future eras. All celebrities stuck to the ‘Sunday’s Best’ dress code, which paid homage to the Gala’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” exhibit that’ll debut on Thursday. Migos wore harmonizing Greek-key-and-rococo Versace jackets, while Luka Sabbat rocked a not so basic H&M fit. From Chadwick Boseman’s all-white papal-level look to Jaden Smith wearing Louis Vuitton, the ‘A-List’ showed out at the 2018 Met Gala (formerly known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala).
